Abstract
Rate of germination and tube growth of fresh and stored pollen were studied in vitro. First germination occurred in all samples after about 10 minutes of incubation. With fresh pollen maximum germination was reached at 1 to 2 hours. Stored pollen which varied in age from 42 to 101 days, differed in response. Germination of one sample (64 days old) was similar to that fresh pollen. Other samples germinated more slowly and required 2 hours or longer to reach maximum germination. Growth patterns of pollen tubes were similar for all samples. Growth was slow for about the first 45 minutes and then appeared to be in a straight line relationship with time. Highest average correlation coefficient was between tube length and time (0.95) and lowest between tube length and germination (0.49).
