Abstract

We have already seen that while the average speed of a car is a continuous variable, the price of a pound of sugar is a discontinuous one. As we shall shortly see, the calculus is concerned with the behaviour of continuous variables; and that is why our main example in the last chapter concerned the speed of a car, rather than the price of sugar.
