Abstract
Last year we1presented data to show the minimal concentration of oxybutyric acid in urine and the optimalpHof urine that were necessary to cause sterilization of urine that had been inoculated with various strains of organisms isolated from urine. This acid results from the incomplete combustion of fats when only extremely small amounts of carbohydrate are given. The so-called ketogenic diet is difficult for many people to take. Recent work originating in England and pioneered by Rosenheim2has resulted in the knowledge that mandelic acid, when administered orally, escapes metabolism or conjugation in the animal organism and is excreted in the urine by the kidney in a concentration sufficient for bactericidal action, provided thepHof the urine is lowered simultaneously. This acid was chosen as a result of experiments with many organic acids. Methods for sterilization of urine in cases of infection of
