Abstract

Emission of light from the radiative recombination of chlorine atoms has been used to measure the rate of dissociation of molecular chlorine behind shock waves in 1:5 Cl2:Ar mixtures between 1735° and 2582°K. Assuming second-order kinetics for the dissociation, —d[Cl2]/dt=kd[Cl2][M], the rate constants kd are adequately expressed by the equation kd=1013.94exp(−48 300 cal/RT) cm3 mole−1·sec−1over the indicated temperature range.
