Abstract

In scheduled cesarean deliveries (CD), rate of decrease in umbilical artery (UA ) pH is related to the severity of maternal hypotension and interval from spinal placement to delivery (Rimsza RR et al. AJOG 2019;389.e9). Base excess (BE) values have a significantly greater usefulness than UA pH values because they do not change with respiratory acidosis and demonstrate a linear, rather than logarithmic, correlation to the degree of metabolic acidosis. Fetuses at term have BE of -2± 0.6 mmol/L (Lazarevic et al.
