Abstract

Rates of gas-solid reactions of the type A gas + B solid → C solid are followed under conditions of pulsed gas-chromatography. The special case is considered wherein B is a non-stoichiometric (“reduced”) oxide and A is oxygen. A generalized method is developed, which implies the selection of a particular dimensionless time. Plots of α, fraction of reduced B which undergoes reoxidation, as a funktion of time will allow to distinguish amongst possible reaction mechanisms. The effects of temperature, particle size, gaseous concentration on the controlling reaction mechanisms has been evaluated over a number of oxides.
