Abstract
The high temperature dynamics of mixed valent 4f-shells is studied by means of rate equations. Symmetries and detailed balance considerably reduce the number of independent rates. Rates are calculated by Fermi's golden rule. The approach presented here provides an elementary and transparent reproduction of results previously obtained using Mori's formalism.
