Abstract

This study presents evidence that scent marking may play a role in breeding by pikas (Ochotona princeps). Pikas are small lagomorphs inhabiting talus slopes in montane regions of western North America. Individuals maintain territories which overlap to a variable extent. The breeding season extends from April through June and varies with specific location (Smith, 1980). Pikas have apocrine sebaceous cheek glands (Harvey and Rosenberg, 1966) and can discriminate individual cheek gland secretions (Meaney, 1982).
