Abstract

Fine structural studies of the rat submaxillary gland, after double fixation in glutaraldehyde and OsO4, have revealed a very characteristic crystal-like arrangement in the granules of the acinar cells. This peculiar structure was studied using various fixations, differential staining, and enzymatic digestion. Its nature is discussed in this paper in relation to the biochemical and ultrastructural data available from the literature.
