Abstract

Previously reported results indicate that under normal physiological conditions, brain glucose transport is faster than metabolism and, therefore, does not ordinarily limit glucose metabolism. However, glucose transport may be limiting when glucose consumption is increased as in seizures (2) or when glucose transport is decreased as reported in chronic hyperglycemia (7) and Alzheimer’s disease (12).
