Abstract

R 6Fe 11− x Al 3+ x (R=Nd, La) samples were investigated with magnetometry and neutron diffraction. Both compounds are antiferromagnetic and undergo a metamagnetic transition at moderate fields. In contrast to La 6Fe 10Al 4, Nd 6Fe 10Al 4 exhibits a large transition hysteresis and magnetic history effects at T<30 K. These effects are related to a Nd spin canting revealed by neutron diffraction in this temperature range.
