Abstract
In 1964 Dr. Geroge C. Miles contributed a short article to JARCE on early Islamic glass weights housed in the Muntaza Palace.1 The present contribution illustrates the holdings of a portion of another Egyptian collection, this time a private one. All of the pieces which are described below were found in al-Fustat. Unfortunately there is no record of their precise archaeological setting. Therefore, they only reflect the coinage or coin weights circulating in al-Fustat without any data as to the date they were deposited or the context in which they were found. With this limitation in mind, interpretations of the significance of the pieces are presented. The monetary history of Islamic Egypt begins with the conquest of the Nile Valley by cAmr b. al-cAs and the establishment of the military encampment at al-Fustat, circa 22 A.H./643 a.d.
