Abstract
Cave dwellers did what we do now when we move into new housing or offices: They cleared areas in front of their caves. They stacked rocks along the periphery of the area that they claimed. They painted the entrances and the interiors to reflect ballads or stories about their past. Why did they do this? Obviously, to mark their space. They did not have alarms, fences, or other home-security devices. They had to ensure that a passerby would observe that the forest or jungle was somehow differentiated from surrounding space, thus indicating ownership. The intruder, who had learned territorial behavior from her antecedents, knew that this was controlled space. If she were going to violate it, she had better do it quickly.
