Abstract

V6Ni16Si7 has a very unusual reciprocal lattice, closely related to that of gamma -brass but requiring a minimum of six basis vectors in order to index all observed reflections. It can be described formally as a three-dimensional, incommensurately modulated beta -brass structure. Characteristic satellite extinction conditions observed at (001) zone axes imply the presence of certain six-dimensional super-space group symmetry operations which can be used to develop a modulated structure approach to the structural description of V6Si16Si7 and to provide a structural comparison with gamma -brass.
