Abstract

Dermatomyositis is an uncommon inflammatory myopathy associated with malignancies such as ovarian, lung and gastric carcinoma.1, 2 It is unusual for dermatomyositis to be associated with a genitourinary malignancy. In fact there have been only 6 published cases of dermatomyositis associated with transitional cell carcinoma, of which 3 were reported in a Finnish population study and the other 3 as single reports.2, 3 In most cases malignancy is diagnosed within 1 year of the onset of dermatomyositis1 and is thought to represent a paraneoplastic syndrome. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that clinical resolution of symptoms after successful cancer treatment is frequently observed. Moreover, when symptoms recur it is typically a harbinger of recurrence of malignant disease. 1
