Abstract

The rapid ingress of water into concrete through cracks endangers the durability of concrete structures. In this study, X-ray radiography was employed to monitor the capillary absorption process in cement paste non-destructively and continuously. To correct the influence of X-ray field nonuniformity and to quantify the water content profiles, a method for field nonuniformity correction and water content calibration was proposed. With the proposed method, water penetration into concrete through cracks could be traced continuously, and the two-dimensional distribution of the absorbed water could be quantified precisely.
