Abstract

At the end of the seventies, the main station of Zurich (a dead-end station), through which 1,200 trains a day ran, reached the limit of its capacity. Increased capacity in the Canton Zurich was only possible by creating the new 12 km line. For the planning and execution team, this new 12 km long line was a big challenge. Not only did very difficult technical problems in geotechnical engineering, in underground work and bridge construction have to be solved, but all these project parts had to be executed without complications under congested city conditions. In the seven years from 1983-1990 all complex planning, execution works and installation of equipment were completed by the great efforts of all those parties involved.
