Abstract
Abstract A method is described for the semiquantitative determination of nitrate in forages by use of a commercially available test strip. A finely ground sample is extracted with deionized water. The color of the reaction zone on the test strip changes from white to pink or purple depending on the nitrate concentration in sample extract. The color on the test strip is compared with the color scale on the test strip container. An intralaboratory study demonstrated the applicability of the test strip to forages with nitrate concentrations from 200 to >10 000ppm.
