Abstract

We present a rapid screening method for keyboard layouts. The method relies on user familiarity with a pre-existing layout, and can provide rapid, low-cost estimates of the eventual user speed on the new layout. It provides an effective pre-screening for the expensive training curve estimates of previous methods, and provides valuable supplementary information not available from them. We provide preliminary validation of the method on a mobile phone layout problem.
