Abstract

A rapid statistical procedure was developed for screening treatments for legume bloat. It distinguished between feeding regimens that produce large differences in bloat frequency. Because only a few data were required, estimates of treatment effects were not precise. Treatments that show promise should be tested further to confirm the results and provide better estimates. Three supplements currently used for the prevention of legume bloat (disodium phosphate, laundry detergent and glucose-tolerance factor) and two experimental formulations (a flocculant, Betz 1190, and mineral salt with a chelating agent, EDTA) were screened. None of these supplements prevented bloat. Key words: Alfalfa bloat, cations, feed supplements, cattle, sequential probability ratio test
