Abstract

The fact that this book, which contains 88 short papers by 174 contributors, represents the published proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology and Immunology held in Berlin in June 1984 can be found only in the fine print on the copyright page and is not mentioned on the cover, on the title page, or in the editor's preface. Because of this origin, the variability in the length and quality of the contributions in the book is not surprising. Despite this flaw, the book succinctly covers an enormous array of subjects that reflect both new and not so new developments in rapid methods and automation in microbiology and immunology.
