Abstract

Determination of copper amounting about 0.3% in blast furnace slag has been made by iodimetry with the use of photoelectric colorimeter within 17 minutes. In this procedure, 1g. sample in a platinum dish is digested with a mixture of 15 cc. nitric acid (1 : 1) and 5 cc. hydrogen fluoride, to which 1g. urea is added as soon as possible for decomposition of nitrous acid, the solution is then neutralized with ammonium hydroxide, made slightly acid with the addition of acetic acid (1 : 1). The coloration of ferric ion is masked by adding 10 cc. ammonium fluoride, then the color of iodine developed by the addition of 5g. potassium iodide is measured. The average error in this method is ±10%, and since it can be done in a short time, the method is applicable in practical operation beside the blast furnace.
