Abstract

Rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is one of many sleep disorders seen in patients with parkinsonism. RBD is a parasomnia in which there is loss of normal skeletal muscle atonia and prominent motor activity during rapid eye movement sleep. Sufferers exhibit vigorous limb movements and dream enactment. RBD may occur occasionally or on a regular basis. This phenomenon is closely associated not only with idiopathic Parkinson's disease but also with the other synucleinopathies. RBD was first identified as a disease entity by Schenk and co-workers in 1986. In this article, the relationship between RBD, parkinsonism and areas of the brain involved in sleep regulation will be examined. It will also explore patient assessment, possible exacerbating factors and treatment options.
