Abstract

Well established is the fact that the virus of poliomyelitis may be demonstrated in the stools of a high percentage of cases of the disease and that in some it may be present for varying lengths of time up to several weeks 1 and even months 2 after the onset of clinical disease. Virus has been recovered from the oropharynx in approximately 50 per cent of the cases when swabs or washings were obtained within a few days of the onset of paralysis, 3 but its detection in this site is uncommon after the fifth day of disease. 4 Presumptive evidence of the harboring of the virus for a considerable period prior to the onset of disease has been advanced by Francis and his associates, 5 who described 5 cases of poliomyelitis with three deaths following tonsillectomy in children probably carrying the virus.
