Abstract

Although the importance of the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio in amniotic fluid (Gluck test) has been widely accepted as an accurate means of predicting fetal lung maturity, the test is not widely available. The importance of certain steps in the test as originally described has been ignored in some of the recent rapid tests reported for lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio determination. Modifications of the original test which make it possible for accurate performance of the test in most hospital laboratories are described. Inaccurate results from oversimplification do occur and are illustrated.
