Abstract

A procedure for the determination of sulphide, sulphate and pyritic sulphur in coals has been developed based upon the sequential liberation of each sulphur form as hydrogen sulphide. Sulphide sulphur is evolved from sample reaction with hydrochloric acid, while sulphate and pyritic sulphur are reduced at 210 ° and 270 °C respectively by a tin(II)-phosphoric acid solution. The evolved hydrogen sulphide is in each case absorbed in an alkaline solution and titrated directly with (2-carboxyphenyl)-hydroxymercury (II). The procedure is more precise than current standard methods and substantial time savings are achieved.
