Abstract
Current determinative methods for total carbon and inorganic carbon and carbonate removal procedures are reviewed. A short method for carbonate removal applied to soil science and geochemistry is given, and results of rapid carbon analysis with dry combustion and volumetric CO 2 determination are discussed. The standard Walkley-Black determination of organic matter in soil is claimed to be unreliable because of appreciable combustion of charcoal, graphite and pyrite.
