Abstract

The high density capabilities of optic and magneto-optic data storage have led to their consideration for use in computer memory applications. In order to be competitive with the magnetic recording products that are the standard of the non-volatile computer memory industry, rapid, random access of the optically stored data is necessary. A system for rapidly accessing optical or magneto-optical discs using modified versions of current commercially available technology has been developed. The system incorporates a two- stage system for both seeks and track following, producing 45ms average seeks, 0.7ms single track seeks, and accurate tracking. The system is designed with the flexibility to allow testing and evaluation of any suitable optical or magneto-optical head design. The design, construction, and performance of the system with one particular optical head design is described.
