Abstract

Magnetic recording is so simple and convenient that it naturally comes to mind as a means of providing audio output for computer-aided learning and other interactive computer systems. However, when rapid, random access to the messages is required, configurations other than the conventional reel-to-reel and cassette recorders must be used. Two such systems are described: a disc recorder employing 10-inch discs, with 30 minutes of playing time per disc, and a belt recorder with a belt width of 4.5 inches, and up to 67 minutes of playing time. In both cases the frequency response is 50 to 3500 Hz (3 dB down), with an average access time of less than one second.
