Abstract

Starting with a definition and recent figures about the prevalence of sexual assault, individual-level and societal-level approaches to preventing rape are discussed. At the individual level, a distinction is made between rape prevention programs targeting men and risk reduction programs targeting women. Evaluation studies reveal that so far there is only limited evidence for the sustained impact of either rape prevention or risk reduction programs. At the societal level, approaches include challenging rape myths and victim blaming as well as introducing legal reform to encourage rape reporting and reduce case attrition due to the operation of the “real rape” stereotype.
