Abstract

RESULTS: Mean age was 57 14 years; 43% of patients were female and mean BMI was 28.6 6 kg/m. The 2 groups were similar in characteristics. The EA group had a higher incidence of hypotensive systolic blood pressure ( 0.05). Mean length of stay (4 3 vs 4 3 days), daily VAS (3.0 2 vs 3.3 2), OBAS scores (3.6 2 vs 3.3 2), and time to start postoperative diet (2.8 2 vs 2.2 2 days) were equivalent. The EA patients had a trend toward a higher total dose of narcotics (147.5 192 vs 98.1 112 mg), and similar amounts of IV narcotics (59.34 152.18 vs 68.67 87.27 mg). The EA and IV groups had equivalent total hospital charges ($144,991 vs $141,338).
