Abstract

Methods of physical therapy for the prophylaxis of migraine, are often used although, so far not been adequately investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate whether treatment with effective lymph drainage (LD) or classical back massage (KM) as prophylaxis against migraine with and without aura.Materials and Methods: Randomized, controlled, parallel-group study of 64 patients (57 women, mean age 45 + / - 10 years) into three groups: The first group received LD (n = 21), the second CM (n = 21) and the third no treatment (waiting group, let n = 22). There was a 30-minute therapy 1 x per week for 8 weeks. Before the beginning and the end of each 8-week treatment was a 4-week observation period, were compared for the determination of efficacy. For inclusion in the study and every four weeks, all patients were examined by a doctor. As a measurement parameter was used to continuously run the DMKG headache diary. Primary endpoints were response rate (minimum 50% reduction in migraine attacks and headache days) and the difference in migraine days, headache days and in the acute ingestion of drugs between the two observation periods. In a secondary endpoint analysis of the same parameters between the baseline and the end of treatment were compared. Results: The observation end resulted in: 1) no significant differences in responder rates, 2) a significant difference in the difference of migraine attacks (p = 0.016) and migraine days (p = 0.019) between LD and WG (p = 0.006 and p = 0.015) and between KM and WG (p = 0.042 and p = 0.016). In the course of which a significant decrease in the number of acute medication taken in the LD group was compared to the other two groups (p = 0.004). The end of treatment resulted in: 1) no significant differences in responder rates, 2) a significant difference to the difference in migraine attacks between LD and WG (p = 0.013), and between KM and WG (p = 0.033), 3) no difference to the difference in migraine days (p = 0.162) and headache days (p = 0.290).Discussion: In this study, led both physical therapy measures KM and LD in a reduction of migraine attacks at the end of treatment and at the end of the observation period. Only under LD occurred in addition to a reduction in acute medication taken. Conclusion: LD and KM are compared to a waiting group effective for prophylaxis of migraine with and without aura. In direct comparison to show significant advantages in some parameters of LD compared to the KM. Further studies with larger numbers of patients need to substantiate these pilot results.
