Abstract

It is shown that the nuclear ground state phonon correlation energy can be easily calculated using an approximate ground state wavefunction in the random phase approximation. Numerical examples are reported for Ni and Zn isotopes. According to the calculation, the magnitude of this energy is about 5 MeV which is much larger than the size of the nuclear pairing energy.
