Abstract

Ramsay Hunt is a rare condition of acute herpes zoster. A painful rash/sores in or near the ear (herpes zoster oticus) and facial weakness/paralysis — are the main hallmarks of Ramsay Hunt. These two symptoms don’t always occur together at the same time. In most cases, only one side of the face is affected. The condition is caused by a viral infection of the facial nerve. It is a type of acute herpes zoster, which occurs by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus at the geniculate ganglion. Early diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a crucial factor to improve damaged nerves. A combination treatment containing anti-viral agents and steroids to reduce inflammation is recommended for the treatment of Ramsay Hunt syndrome. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the damage to the facial nerve.
