Abstract

Raman measurements of the low frequency region (0–200 cm−1) and the vibron-phonon combination bands in α-Arx(N2)1−x mixed crystals (0 < x < 0.15) are presented. The similarity of the spectra obtained for Ar admixed crystal at low temperature and for pure α-N2 at elevated temperature, leads us to conclude that the admixture of Ar atoms increases the librational amplitude of the N2 molecules. The librational density of states in the α-Arx(N2)1−x mixed crystals, which is transition. The asymmetry in the line shape of the Eg libron for x > 0.02 may point to a librational motion in distorted surroundings. The residual line width of the Tg mode at 36.5 cm−1 is noticeably smaller than reported so far in literature.
