Abstract

The high-temperature tetragonal to cubic phase transition in thallous and rubidium azide is studied by laser Raman spectroscopy of the external mode region. The linewidths of the librational modes of the linear N3- ion show a marked divergence as the temperature approaches Tc. The effect is associated with a fluctuation of the orientation of the azide ion which occurs at the phase transition. A slight softening of the frequencies of the librational modes was observed.
