Abstract

Germanium microcrystals with free boundaries were prepared by gas evaporated technique. From Raman and electron diffraction measurements, it is shown for the first time that amorphous particles as small as 80 Å exist in gas-evaporated germanium particles. For the crystalline particles which have the diamond structure, the size dependence of Raman spectra was observed. Importance of surface layer contribution to the Raman scattering is discussed.
