Abstract

AbstractThe Raman spectrum of the coordination compound Cu(NO3)2 · N2O4 is reported. X‐ray diffraction studies showed its lattice to be composed of layers of polymeric [Cu(NO3)3]− anions (in which the Cu—nitrate bonds are bridging) and of discrete charge‐balancing NO+ cations, whereas infrared results indicated the presence of discrete covalent N2O4 molecules in the lattice, and some interaction of Cu atoms with the NO+ units. Raman spectra of this highly hygroscopic and deeply coloured compound are in accord with the structural conclusions of the x‐ray diffraction work.
