Abstract

Analysis by Raman spectroscopy unveils photosynthetic and photoprotective pigments in halite crust crystals—rock salt—from the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, according to Petr Vitek from the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy, and Mineral Resources at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and his collaborators. These scans indicate that the rocks once were colonized with microbial communities, confirming observations by Jacek Wierzchos from Instituto de Recursos Naturales, CSIC, Madrid, Spain, and his collaborators.
