Abstract

Polarized and depolarized Raman scattering spectra for the ν1 (A′i) mode of the CO2−3 ion in the molten Li2 CO3 system at 1023 K have been measured. The interference from background radiation could be eliminated by a phase detection method. Rotational and vibrational autocorrelation functions were obtained by Fourier transformation of the spectra. The rate of the rotational relaxation of the CO2−3 ion in molten Li2 CO3 at 1023 K is considerably slower than that of the NO−3 ion in molten LiNO3 at 623 K, whereas the vibrational relaxation of the former is quicker than that of the latter.
