Abstract

The Raman spectra of nitrate solutions of Ag I, Cu II, Zn II, Hg II, Ca II, Al III, In III, Ce III, and Th IV were measured. In every case there was evidence of specific association between the cation and nitrate with lowering of the nitrate symmetry from D3h to C28. The system Ca II–NO3— was studied in detail by making quantitative intensity measurements in solutions of various concentrations of Ca(NO3)2, some with added NH4NO3 and some with added Ca(ClO4)2. From these measurements it was found that the only associated species of importance was CaNO3+ for which the association constant in the ionic strength range of 10 to 40 was 0.12 to 0.17. This value was independent of temperature in the range 26° to 94°C.
