Abstract

Low-temperature, polarized, single-crystal Raman spectra of the α-alum CsGa(SeO4) 2·12H2O were recorded to 1000 cm -1. The lattice modes, the external modes of water and the internal modes of [SeO4]2- , [Ga(H2O)6] 3+ and [Cs(H2O)6 ]+ were assigned. The unpolarized Raman spectrum of CsIn(SeO4)2·12H 2O was also recorded. The alums of Group 13 elements are optically transparent and suitable hosts for a wide range of trivalent hexaaqua cations.
