Abstract

Raman scattering in ferromagnetic CdCr 2Se 4 has been investigated between 7° and 295°K using the back scattering technique. The two lines found at 154 cm −1 and 239 cm −1 are identified as Γ 12 +(E g) and Γ 1 +(A 1g) phonon modes, respectively. Strong evidence is presented that two further lines observed at 145 cm −1 and 168 cm −1, appearing only below the ferromagnetic Curie temperature, are due to scattering of light by magnons. A Γ 25 +(F 2g) optical magnon mode is tentatively assigned to the strong 168 cm −1 line, but two-magnon scattering cannot be excluded.
