Abstract

Raman scattering is used to analyse phase transitions and structures in KC60 crystals. The doping of the crystals was performed at 450 K and studied in situ by observing the Ag(2) pinch mode in the Raman spectrum. The crystals were homogeneously doped at least up to the penetration depth of the laser used. Slow cooling from 450 K to room temperature showed clearly the phase separation of KC60 into C60 and K3C60 at 420 K. With fast cooling rates, dramatic changes in the Raman spectra were observed and interpreted as a phase transition to an orthorhombic structure as previously for RbC60. Quenching experiments for KC60 showed that a fraction of KC60 could be retained, but it dissolved rapidly even at temperatures below room temperature.
