Abstract
Raman spectra of chemisorbed cyanide on a silver (110) surface exposed to air show an enhanced Raman cross section for the C-N stretch vibrations. A possible mechanism for the enhancement of light scattering cross sections by a factor of the order of 10 3 is the Van der Waals type interaction of the adsorbate with the metal surface, analogous to electroreflectance. Scattering of free Bloch electrons at stepped surfaces could enhance this factor further and would give rise to a strong electronic surface Raman effect, thus explaining the high background signal.
