Abstract

AbstractRaman spectra of solid 2,4,6‐trichlorophenol and 2,4,6‐tribromophenol (s‐TCP and s‐TBP) have been recorded at 80 and 300 K. Infrared spectra in the region 4000–200 cm−1 have also been recorded of the solids and of dilute solutions in CCl4. Vibrational assignments and qualitative descriptions of the normal modes of these compounds are proposed on the basis of substituted benzene molecules with Cs symmetry. Some evidence for intermolecular hydrogen bonding has been found in the solid state infrared spectra of both compounds, but they do not appear to self‐associate in CCl4 solution.
