Abstract

Raman and atomic resonance lasers have been observed in optically excited thallium (6P1/2 −6P 3/2)-xenon mixtures. T1(6P 1/2) or T1(6P 3/2) atoms were produced by selective photodissociation of TlCl at 308 or 193 nm respectively in the presence of a high pressure of xenon. A pulsed dye laser was used to optically excite the resulting Tl-Xe quasi-molecules via the quasi-molecular absorptions in the vicinity of the Tl(6P1/2, 6P3/2-7S1/2) atomic resonance transitions. The possibility of realizing an optically pumped Tl-Xe excimer laser is discussed.
