Abstract

Abstract In Moorish society genealogy expresses in terms of descent the hierarchical positions of individuals and groups. The concept of nasab, which has been translated as descent or genealogy, corresponds to an ascending view of the links that through original ancestors, define respective positions as a result of generational bifurcations. The classificatory logic of these genealogical systems differs from that of segmentary lineage systems. The conception of the tribe is organized around the distinction between centre (the nasab of the dominant group) and periphery.
