Abstract

At the turn of the twentieth Century, the American poet-philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was considered to be one of the greatest thinkers of his time. In the Netherlands, his Essays were read by poets and novelists, among them Louis Couperus. In his third ‘work of art’, Ecstacy (1892), the main figures read and discuss Emerson's Essays. In this article I want to show how some of Emerson's ideas and terminology have been used in Ecstasy, particularly his essay on Compensation which must have been a source of inspiration to Louis Couperus.
