Abstract

The two purposes of sluice or relief operation are as follows : __ a) To reduce wave build-up in canals after a power set cuts out. b) To put part of the flow throught the power set where the electricity produced cannot be got rid of. A series of devices designed to put plant on sluice operation during and immediately after the transient phase and during the steady operation phase are described, first showing the sequence of operations for the various items of governor equipment in the following cases : __ (i) Sluice operation without a downstream gate, with a definite combined operating relationship between guide vane opening and runner blade angle, and if necessary with the power unit remaining under speed governor control; (ii) Sluice operation with a downstream gate and an automatic gate in the draught tube. In this case the guide vanes and runner blades are set ,vide open and the operating speed is generally below the synchronous speed; (iii) On-cam sluice operation of turbines with relief sluice gates by the power station. In some cases it is necessary to pass nearly all the turbine flow before the power units cut out, after which part of the flow goes through the turbines in sluice operation and the rest through gates. The equipment required for these various types of operation is described, also special requirements connected with sluice operation, such as supplying flow to auxiliary equipment and speed-governing. Specific improvements planned for plants under construction are mentioned.
